From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Will Smith might be coming to a cinema near you soon as Deadshot in Suicide Squad, but his fans will never forget that at heart, he’s Nineties hero The Fresh Prince.

The US actor and rapper reminded us of one of his biggest hits when he gave an impromptu performance of “Miami” while visiting the Florida city to promote his new film.

The block party, hosted by studio Warner Bros, had been organised to unveil a Suicide Squad mural, with Smith’s co-stars Margot Robbie, Karen Fukuhara and Jay Hernandez also in attendance.

Soon, partygoers were taken back to the old school when Smith stormed the stage and began rapping the 1998 classic as his movie pals danced along and the crowd went wild.

Suicide Squad stars Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. The storyline focuses on a group of villains recruited by a secret government agency to carry out black op missions in exchange for reduced jail sentences and is expected to perform strongly at the global box office.

It arrives in UK cinemas on 5 August.
