From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Hollywood heavyweights Steven Spielberg and Harvey Weinstein are to lock heads having decided to make two films based on the same story.
The duo had originally planned to work together on the project which tells the real-life story of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy in 1850s Italy, but director Spielberg recently decided to move ahead with the 'passion project' alone.
Not that this has burned producing maestro Weinstein, however - according to The Hollywood Reporter, he plans to continue with his own version.
The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara follows a six-year-old boy who was taken from his family by the Vatican in 1858; both versions will be an adaptation of David Kertzer's novel.
Production on Spielberg's version will commence in April following the completion of new film Ready Player One; the Jurassic Park director has signed up Mark Rylance - who also appeared in his BFG adaptation and won an Oscar for his role in Bridge of Spies - as well as Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis) in the hope to release it in time for awards season.
Weinstein is lining up Robert De Niro to star in a version that will reportedly be directed by Baltasar Kormákur (Everest, TV series Trapped).
Ready Player One will be released March 2018. Weinstein - who has produced Oscar-winning films such as Pulp Fiction, The English Patient and Shakespeare In Love - has upcoming producing credits on Tulip Fever, Amityville: The Awakening and LFF favourite Lion.
