Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be driven by Rey and Kylo Ren's relationship, the film’s co-writer has revealed.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, Chris Terrio said that the tussle between light and dark will fuel the tension at the heart of the film. “Some of the most interesting scenes in The Last Jedi are the conversations between Rey and Ren, [and] we’ve tried to pick up that complicated relationship that really has been present ever since the interrogation in [The Force Awakens].
“When Ren takes off his mask, there’s a nakedness about him with Rey that he doesn’t express to anyone else,” he continued.
Terrio also praised The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson for “developing that in fascinating ways”, adding: “We’ve been able to develop it even further.”
Fans have been speculating about Rey’s potential embrace of the Dark Side since August, after the film’s latest trailer depicted her wearing a black hood and wielding a double red lightsaber.
Several theories did the rounds as a result, some of which predicted Rey could either be a clone or under the spell of Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid).
Another theory predicts that Rey doesn’t veer to the dark side, but instead merges aspects of both the dark and light sides of the Force, restoring the balance – just as Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) did – once and for all.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released in the UK on 16 December.
