From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A behind-the-scenes look at the new Star Wars film The Rise of Skywalker shows Ed Sheeran in costume as a stormtrooper, seemingly confirming a reported cameo.

It was claimed last December that the British singer had filmed a secret cameo at Pinewood Studios alongside cast members John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Oscar Isaac.

Also seen in the footage is Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda – most recently seen in BBC show His Dark Materials – as a Resistance fighter, posing alongside new cast addition Naomi Ackie.

Intriguingly, Disney is stating that neither Sheeran nor Miranda are confirmed to appear in the new JJ Abrams film.

This would not be the first beloved series that Sheeran has cameoed in – the singer made a brief appearance in Game of Thrones back in 2017.

Daniel Craig played a stormtrooper in Star Wars film The Force Awakens back in 2015. Other stars who have made brief appearances in the franchise include Simon Pegg, Justin Theroux and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The Rise of Skywalker will be released on 18 December.
