While many people would suspect George Lucas would be disparaging about the latest Star Wars movies, the auteur has only been publicly positive.

According to Kathleen Kennedy, Lucas “really liked” The Force Awakens, while Gareth Edwards said the Star Wars creator “really liked” Rogue One.

A spokesperson for Lucas has since revealed what the director thought of The Last Jedi, apparently going one step further than saying he "really liked it" calling the movie “beautifully made”.

"And in speaking with director Rian Johnson after viewing was complimentary," representative Connie Wethington told The Hollywood Reporter.

Lucas, as any Star Wars fan knows, created the science fiction world, directing the first instalment — now subtitled A New Hope — which was released 1977.

After other directors took over the helm for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Lucas returned for the prequels which received mixed reviews upon release.

Meanwhile, the critics have given their verdicts on The Last Jedi, the reaction being overwhelmingly positive. Read our own review here.

The Last Jedi reaches cinemas 14 December.
