Star Wars: 33 years since release and people are only just realising this Return of the Jedi mistake
It’s a little ‘blink-and-you’ll-miss-it’

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The year is 1983. It’s been three years since The Empire Strikes Back - the long-awaited sequel to 1977’s Star Wars - was released, and the ‘final’ part of the saga, Return of the Jedi, is about to enter theatres. Excitement is high.
Fortunately, Luke, Leia, and Han’s return is everything everyone wanted (debatable), tying a neat bow around the series. Blinded by their love of Star Wars, fans were willing to forgive any mistakes made in the Richard Marquand-directed flick.
Turns out, fans were so enamoured by the film a simple mistake has been overlooked for the last 33 years, with only a handful aware of the quite minor mess-up, recently brought up once again by Radio Times.
We’ll give you a quick chance to spot the mistake. Speed up to 0.46-second mark in the below clip and see if you can work it out. It’s a little ‘blink-and-you’ll-miss-it’.
Nothing? Something? If you stop at just the right moment you’ll notice that Darth Vader’s lightsaber blade is coming out of the wrong end.
Scandalous. Time for another special edition. Right, George?
Meanwhile, excitement for the next Star Wars film is growing exponentially thanks to its impending release. Recently, the film’s toy range was announced via a hilarious animated clip.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story reaches UK cinemas 16 December.
