A remake of 1984 romantic comedy Splash has been confirmed by the original film's producer Brian Grazer.
During an interview with CNBC, Grazer was asked who he'd cast in Tom Hanks' role in a remake of the Ron Howard film before replying: "I'm actually going to do Splash today, and I can't say.
He added: "There's a movie star going to be involved and I haven't announced it."
He did, however, let slip one tidbit of information; regarding the film's original script - which saw the story told through the eyes of Daryl Hannah's mermaid character, Madison - the producer revealed: We're going to do a version of that, but I can't tell you the twist."
It seems Grazer may be acting so secretive as to drum up some actual interest in yet another unnecessary remake.
The original Splash - which earned an Oscar nomination in the Original Screenplay category - tells the story of Hanks' Allen Bauer, a man who falls in love with a mermaid after she rescues him when he falls into the sea. A Disney TV movie sequel Splash, Too followed in 1988.
Movieweb reports that Grazer's company Imagine Entertainment actually acquired a script entitled Merman back in 2009. Written by Jennifer Abu Hollander and Jeff Moskowitz, it followed a merman who surfaces on land in order to track down his mermaid fiancée who has fallen for a human (really).
Whatever happens, it'll be a real fish out of water story.
