Your support makes all the difference.Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts has confirmed the theory that the web-slinger appeared in Iron Man 2 back in 2010.
During promotion for the film, actor Tom Holland previously stated that Peter Parker made a fleeting appearance in the sequel during a moment which saw Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark save a young kid - now revealed to be the future Spider-Man - from being obliterated by a killer drone.
However, Watts has suggested it was never always intended to be the young character.
Instead, after researching the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s back catalogue, Watts approached the studio's President Kevin Feige after realising the time difference tallied up with the age of the character in Homecoming (he’s 15 and there are six years between the two films).
“A lot of the Easter eggs in [Homecoming] just started by rewatching the movies,” he told UPROXX. “I was watching all these other movies and being like, ‘What if that little kid at the Stark Expo was Peter Parker? In the Iron Man mask. Like, he’d be about the right age for that. And he loves Tony Stark.’
Watts continued: “So it’s this thing where, because it’s not completely figured out, that you can just go back and basically write fan fiction for those movies, then the fan fiction becomes reality.”
Watts’ comments suggest that the moment won’t be referenced in Spider-Man: Homecoming despite Downey Jr's presence as co-lead, but either way it’s a nice bit of continuity that succeeds in tying the MCU together effectively.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released 7 July.
