From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Sharon Stone has revealed that Britney Spears once sent her an “important, poignant letter” asking for the actor’s help.

The Basic Instinct star opened up about her bond with the singer during an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show yesterday (31 March).

Stone said that Spears had reached out for help around 2007, when the pop star was going through a “very difficult time”.

“Britney wrote to me a very long and important, poignant letter during a very difficult time in her life – about the time when people would recognise her for when she shaved her head – wanting me to help her,” she said.

Stone added that when she had received the letter, she was also “in a very difficult time of my life and I couldn’t help myself”.

“The truth of the matter is, we both needed help,” Stone said. “She needed help and I needed help.”

Her comments came after Clarkson had questioned the actor over an Instagram post Spears had recently shared of a series of women, including Stone, Miley Cyrus and Sarah Jessica Parker.

The singer had captioned it: “These are women that have truly inspired my life. These cool ladies always add a spark to my day.”

Stone also opened up about Spears’s ongoing legal battle with her father, Jamie, as she campaigns to have him removed as her conservator.

“It’s very hard to be a very successful woman and not have anyone control you, taking your finances and handling you,” said Stone.

“Women – and I’m sure, all of the young stars – get handled. There is a huge breaking point and there is a point where you get broken.”

She continued: “The thing with Britney Spears is so out of control and so awful. I can say certainly it’s been very out of control and very awful, more than once, in my life.”

Spears recently addressed Framing Britney, the New York Times documentary exploring her conservatorship as well as the hostile media coverage she has received throughout her career.

She wrote on Instagram: “I didn’t watch the documentary but from what I did see of it, I was embarrassed by the light they put me in. I cried for two weeks and well… I still cry sometimes.”
