Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Rachel Weisz has an issue with members of the press who are intent on continually asking her what it’s like to act alongside other women.
The British actor, who was attending the 2018 Gotham Awards, used the ceremony as an opportunity to express a hope that one day she won’t be asked such questions, highlighting the double standard that male actors don’t get asked the same question about working with other men.
Accepting the Special Jury Award For Ensemble Performance for Yorgos Lanthimos film The Favourite, Weisz said: “I hope one day in the not-so-distant future we don’t get asked what it was like to share the screen with other women. Because I don’t think you ever ask men that. But I could be wrong.”
Weisz stars in the period comedy alongside Olivia Colman and Emma Stone who both couldn’t attend the ceremony. In their place, Weisz brought along two cardboard cutout masks of their faces.
The film reunited Weisz with The Lobster director Lanthimos. in it, she plays Lady Sarah whose status as the closest friend of a frail Queen Anne (Colman) is rocked upon the arrival of Stone’s character, Abigail Hill.
Upon its release in the US last week, the Fox Searchlight film has become the highest-grossing independent film of the year so far.
Colman is expected to battle in the forthcoming Oscars race in the Best Actress category alongside contenders Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and Glenn Close (The Wife).
The Favourite is released in the UK on 1 January 2019.
