Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas speak at the 93rd Academy Awards Nominations Announcement

Priyanka Chopra’s quirky response to an Australian journalist who questioned if she was “qualified” to announce the Oscar nominations is receiving a lot of praise on the internet.

The 38-year-old actor, who ranks amongst the top stars in Bollywood, and has worked in several Hollywood films and shows, announced the Oscar nominations on Monday with her husband Nick Jonas, who is an American singer.

However, Chopra’s eligibility for announcing the nominations of cinema’s top honour was questioned by Australian journalist Peter Ford, whose bio reads "The best & most widely heard entertainment reporter in Australia & NZ."

In his tweet, Ford wrote: "No disrespect to these two but I’m not sure their contribution to the movies qualifies them to be announcing Oscar nominees."

The tweet received a lot of flak from many of Chopra’s fans who asked Ford to watch her films or to just google her.

However, the actor had a better idea.

She responded with a video of her extensive list of filmography on IMDB. “Would love your thoughts on what qualifies someone. Here are my 60+ film credentials for your adept consideration,” wrote Chopra on Twitter.

Her response was applauded by her fans, with some calling her “queen” for “shutting down” the journalist with grace. Some asked her to “ignore naysayers.”

The former Miss World title holder has had a two-decade-long career as an actor and now wears several hats, including being a producer and a singer. She had already done over 50 movies in India when she began appearing in the American TV show Quantico, which made her hugely popular in the US as well. She has over 61 million followers on Instagram.

However, her success hasn’t insured her from public scrutiny. In 2018, when the actor married singer Nick Jonas, entertainment news website — The Cut — ran a critical piece labelling her a “global scam artist.”

The piece raised questions over the star’s popularity as an actress and weaved theories about her allegedly using Jonas for her gains. It received a lot of backlash from fans in India as well as the US and was eventually taken down by the website.

Chopra’s upcoming projects include the fourth Matrix movie and Text For You, which she recently completed filming in London.
