On Monday (17 August), Deadline reported that John Hughes’s 1987 road trip comedy is to be remade, with Smith and Hart stepping into the roles made famous by Steve Martin and the late John Candy.
The project will be written by Aeysha Carr, who is best known for her work on TV series Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Hulu’s Woke.
The original Planes, Trains and Automobiles was released to critical acclaim, with reviewers and audiences noting that the film marked a career shift for Hughes, who was previously known for directing teen movies such as The Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Hughes also wrote and executive produced the film, which follows two mismatched strangers who are forced to become travelling partners in their attempt to get home for Thanksgiving.
The news of the remake received a mixed reception on Twitter, with many fans arguing that while the prospect of Hart and Smith working together was exciting, the original was so good that any remake could only be a disappointment.
“Just a reminder that Planes, Trains and Automobiles might be the best film John Hughes made and you should remake terrible films that could have worked, not great ones that nailed it,” one fan tweeted.
Another echoed: “Planes, Trains & Automobiles is perfection. Don’t mess with perfection.”
“Please, do something original for a change,” writer Jimmy Palmiotti tweeted, adding: “Is it that hard?”

“Oh good, the first one really needed improvement,” another sarcastically commented.
Actor Jonathan Lloyd Walker, who had starred in both the 2011 prequel of 1982 horror film The Thing and the 2007 Flash Gordon TV series, tweeted: “A remake of a classic is always a mistake. You can’t perfect perfection. And I say this with first-hand experience.”
