From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Annabelle Wallis - best known for her role as Grace Burgess in BBC drama Peaky Blinders and Jane Seymour in The Tudors - is reportedly in talks to star in Tom Cruise’s reboot of classic horror series The Mummy.

According to Variety, Wallis would be the female lead, an archaeologist we imagine will be some incarnation of Rachel Weisz’s character Evelyn Carnahan-O’Connell.

Also revealed in the report is that Sofia Boutella will take on the titular role as The Mummy, having had roles in StreetDance 2, Kinsman and the upcoming Star Trek Beyond.

Tom Cruise was previously announced to be taking a lead role in the film which itself will act as a launch pad for Universal’s Monsters Cinematic Universe.

In case your wondering what on earth the Universal Monsters Cinematic Universe is, let me quickly explain; between the early 30s and late 40s Universal released numerous films based on classic horror novels such as Dracula and Frankenstein.

Eventually, these monsters crossed over into each others films - the same way Iron Man and Captain America crossed over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Having seen the success of Marvel’s strategy, Universal look set on once again recreating their shared film universe which may have started with Dracula Untold (no-one is sure whether that will actually start things off), but will definitely include the upcoming Mummy, Wolf Man, Van Helsing, Gil-man, Bride of Frankenstein and Invisible Man reboots. If everything goes to plan we'll probably see an Avengers-style team-up, I imagine.

Meanwhile, Wallis will be reprising her role in Peaky Blinders season 3, which has reportedly wrapped up filming.
