The comedian, who entertained Hollywood stars for the final time at the Golden Globes this year, shared what he says would have been his first joke had he been hosting the 2020 Oscars.
“It’s great to see such diversity in the room tonight,” wrote Gervais. “Rich sex pests of all shapes and sizes.”
In another tweet, he mocked Hollywood stars for hiring “badly paid migrant staff”.
This year's Oscars was hostless for the second consecutive year, but a number of stars presented awards, including Mahershala Ali, Zazie Beetz, Timothée Chalamet, Penélope Cruz, Jane Fonda and Josh Gad.
Olivia Colman, whose performance in The Favourite won her the Best Actress Oscar in 2019, presented the award for Best Actor, which went to Joaquin Phoenix for his starring role in Todd Phillips' Joker.
South Korean black comedy Parasite was the evening's biggest winner, making history by becoming the first ever foreign language film to win Best Picture.
