From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Emma Stone criticised the lack of female representation compared to male while presenting the Best Director award at the Oscars in a repeat of the same jibe made by Natalie Portman at the Golden Globes.

The actor, who won for La La Land at last year's ceremony, was announcing the winner when she highlighted the fact that four male filmmakers were nominated alongside just one woman.

“These four men and Greta Gerwig created their own masterpieces this year,” she said to applause from the crowd before naming The Shape of Water's Guillermo del Toro as the winner.

Portman was praised for the dig against the fact that the five Golden Globes nominees were all male after the surprising snub for Lady Bird director Gerwig and Wonder Woman's Patty Jenkins, something which was immediately pointed out on social media.

“Here are all the male nominees,” she said as the names of Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk), Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Steven Spielberg (The Post), Ridley Scott (All the Money in the World) and eventual winner, del Toro, were reeled off.

The 90th Academy Awards earlier saw Jordan Peele become the first black screenwriter to win Best Original Screenplay for horror satire Get Out.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the ceremony kicking things off with a rather safe opening monologue which poked fun at Harvey Weinstein and Mike Pence.
