The film, which premiered at Sundance, was written by Aaron Hendry and Reza Sixo Safai and stars Nick Cassavetes, martial arts expert Tak Sakaguchi and Yuzuka Nakaya. It is directed by Sion Sono in what is his first English-language feature.
In the film, Cage plays a criminal who is sprung from jail by a warlord (played by Bill Moseley), whose granddaughter has been kidnapped.
Once released from jail, Cage has a set period of time in which he must find the woman and return her home.
The trailer has sparked much comment online primarily because of a bizarre black leather jump-suit packed full of explosives that Cage is seen wearing. If he fails to return the woman in time, the explosives are to be detonated.
Fans discussing the trailer online have deemed it “wild”, “gonzo” and “bizarre”. One fan said: “The trailer for Prisoners of the Ghostland looks nuts in the best possible way. It’s great to see Bill Moseley alongside Nicolas Cage in this. Can’t wait!”
Another wrote: “This could well be the wildest Nic Cage film to date”, while a third added: “All I can say is buckle up for a wild ride!”
After starring in a series of critical and commercial flops, Cage recently said he was “surprised” by the positive reaction his new film, Pig.
“It was very nice to have an enthusiastic response. It’s a little surprising but very nice.” The Oscar winner and one-man meme-machine told The Hollywood Reporter.

Cage has been the subject of much of the positive press the film has received with reviewers describing his role in Pig as his “best performance in years” and the movie itself as a “mournful fable of loss and withdrawal, art and ambition”.
Cage also detailed why he preferred doing independent films like Pig rather than Hollywood blockbusters, such as The Rock and Con Air, from which he made his name.
“I do think there’s a cult of fear in the studio system that’s a little stifling, “he said, adding: “I don’t feel that when I’m making an independent movie”.
