Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish used the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards as an opportunity to share some of her best jokes.

The Girls Trip star - who hosted the annual ceremony on Monday night - hilariously narrated a number of pre-taped and live skits throughout the evening.

In a parody of Black Panther, Haddish went to Wakanda to flirt-fight with Black Panther hero Chadwick Boseman.

She then opened the show by covering Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow," clad in an inflatable dress that "got pregnant" at the sight of Michael B. Jordan in the audience.

At one point during the event, she wore a replica of Meghan Markle's wedding gown saying, "She's from my hood. I had to represent."

Some of Haddish's best jokes came from her opening monologue in which she took the opportunity to hit on her favourite men from the audience, including Nick Jonas and Seth Rogen.

The show also featured pre-taped sketches where Haddish yelled at the screen during A Quiet Place and flirted with Adam Driver's Kylo Ren during Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

See some of Haddish's best lines from the awards show below.

She brought up grapefruiting

"You know who else I love? Zendaya. She taught me how to model and I taught her how to grapefruit. She's 21 now, y'all! She's a grown woman. You got to know how to do that if you want a husband."

She hit on Seth Rogen

"Seth Rogen is here. I like you, Seth. You're my favourite bearded white man since Abraham Lincoln."

And Chris Pratt

"I'm glad this show covers both TV and movies because now I get to flirt with Chris Pratt from Parks and Recreation and Chris Pratt from Guardians Of The Galaxy. Hey Chris, I got a galaxy you can guard."

Plus one of the Jonas brothers

"Nick Jonas is gonna tear it up with Mustard, which is also how I want him to tear it up with me."

Haddish compared the Kardashian family to Star Wars

"I'm always excited to see the Kardashians. The family is basically the Star Wars franchise. They make a ton of money. A new one is always popping up! And they're ruled by a bossy overlord who sleeps in a mask and she loves black men."

She commemorated a year of firsts

"It's been a year of firsts for black people. I'm the first black woman to host the MTV Movie & TV Awards. Black Panther is the first African-American movie to make a billion dollars. And A Quiet Place is the first movie to scare black people out of talking in movie theatres."

She took aim at Riverdale

"It's a darker version of the Archie comics. Apparently Betty dates Jughead because he's named after his penis."

She had an interesting interpretation of 13 Reasons Why

"I started watching this Netflix show cause I thought it was the sequel to 12 Years a Slave. It's not."

Haddish had a reason for keeping her intro to the point

"When a black girl talks this much on MTV, usually she just got cat-fished."

Her Beyoncé story

"I'm Tiffany Haddish and I know who bit Beyoncé."
