Filming for Mission: Impossible 6 has been halted after Tom Cruise broke his ankle while attempting a stunt where he leapt between two buildings.

Paramount Pictures confirmed that the production of its latest instalment in the Mission: Impossible franchise had been paused after he was hurt filming in London over the weekend.

Footage showed the 55-year-old attempting the jump and crashing into a wall, and later seen limping off the set.

A statement from Paramount said: "During production on the latest Mission: Impossible film, Tom Cruise broke his ankle while performing a stunt.

"Production will go on hiatus while Tom makes a full recovery, and the film remains on schedule to open 27 July 2018.

"Tom wants to thank you all for your concern and support and can't wait to share the film with everyone next summer."

Cruise is well-known for doing his own stunts, which is rare for an A-list actor.

Recent stunts include filming in zero-gravity for the aeroplane crash scene in The Mummy, clinging to the side of a taxiing plane in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, and climbing Dubai's Burj Khalifa building in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.

Stunts performed by Cruise for the latest film include driving a motorbike into a car in Paris, and parachuting in Oxfordshire.

Mission: Impossible 6 is set for release in UK cinemas on 27 July 2018.
