From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Jim Carrey got into a heated Twitter exchange with Ted Cruz after tweeting out his support for Beto O'Rourke as American voters cast their ballots for the midterms.

The comedian urged his followers to vote in an impassioned message on Tuesday. He sided with O'Rourke, Cruz's Democratic opponent in the Texas Senate race.

"Go Beto! Go Democrats! Vote like there's no tomorrow," Carrey wrote. "Let's make this Tuesday like the end of every great vampire movie. Pull back the curtains and let the sunshine turn all those bloodsuckers to dust."

Cruz bit back in a tweet of his own.

"Hollywood liberals all in for Beto," the Republican incumbent wrote. "But (self-described Socialist) Jim Carrey made a mistake here: Vampires are dead, and everyone knows the dead vote Democrat..."

Carrey kept the spat going in a response criticising Cruz for his continued support of Donald Trump.

"Wow... sorry I rattled your chain, @TedCruz," the comedian tweeted.

"I thought you would have more important things to do two days before an election – like sucking up to the guy who called your wife ugly and accused your dad of murder. But I get it! It's hard to say no when Trump grabs ya by the pussy!"

Trump infamously attacked Heidi Cruz, the Texas senator's wife, during his presidential campaign in March 2016.

The then-presidential-candidate tweeted side-by-side photos of Melania Trump and Mrs Cruz, with the sentence "The images are worth a thousand words" scribbled across the collage.

Back in May 2016, Trump accused Cruz's father of having possibly assisted JFK's assassin Lee Harvey Oswald – a claim dismissed by the Cruz campaign at the time.

In his tweet, Carrey also referenced the Access Hollywood tape in which the president can be heard bragging about being able to "grab" women "by the pussy" because he's a celebrity.

Incidentally, Cruz has been involved in a vampire-related feud before. In 2014, an episode of the HBO show saw several Republicans being massacred during a fictional Cruz rally.

On that occasion, he used a rebuke similar to the one he deployed on Monday against Carrey, once again claiming that "the dead tend to vote overwhelmingly for Dems", meaning he "never had a chance with the vampire vote".
