Disney has released the first teaser trailer for the much-anticipated sequel Mary Poppins Returns starring Emily Blunt in the title role originally made famous by Julie Andrews.

The clip was unveiled at Disney's expo D23 by director Rob Marshall (Chicago, Into the Woods).

While the teaser doesn't give much away, it will no doubt whet the appetite of fans - Poppins can be seen smiling to the camera, holding her trademark umbrella.

The film's cast is suitably British with Blunt, Ben Whishaw Colin Firth, Emily Mortimer and Angela Lansbury all appearing alongside Meryl Streep and Hamilton star Lin Manuel-Miranda.

Capping this is one of the 1964 classic's original stars who confirmed his appearance late last year; chimney sweep Bert himself Dick Van Dyke will reprise his role in the follow-up.

The film will follow the adult versions of Jane and Michael Banks as well as their children.

Blunt will be playing Poppins, continuing the legacy set by Julie Andrews in the 1964 original. As Variety report, the sequel will follow Jane and Michael Banks, who are now adults, and their children.

Mary Poppins Returns has been line dup for a Christmas Day 2018 release.
