At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy will return to voice the Joker and Batman respectively, in an animated film adaptation of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland's iconic 1988 graphic novel, The Killing Joke.

Hamill and Conroy are known for first voicing the characters in the '90s Batman: The Animated Series; though they've made appearances in the Arkham trilogy of video games, as well as numerous animated series like Justice League and Superman.

"The chance to work once again with Kevin Conroy, my favorite Batman, in what some consider the definitive origin of this iconic villain is a dream come true for me," Hamill told Comic Book Resources. "I am beyond thrilled to return as The Joker in The Killing Joke!"

"I’ve had the great privilege of voicing Batman for more than two decades, and some of my favorite moments in the recording booth have been alongside Mark Hamill," Conroy stated. "Mark always enables me to be a better actor. I’m thrilled that we’re both back to bring these characters to life in one of the most heralded Batman/Joker stories of all time."

Hamill also took to Twitter to reveal the news to fans; posting a photograph of himself and Conroy, as well as tweeting a first image from the film.

Warner Bros. Animation's adaptation will also see Ray Wise voice Commissioner Gordon and Tara Strong voice Barbara Gordon/Batgirl; The Killing Joke being particularly infamous for its storyline surrounding Barbara, in which she's brutally paralysed at the hands of The Joker.

The film is set for release on DVD and Blu-ray later this year.
