From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. In a surprising casting announcement, Mariah Carey will voice either Commissioner Gordon or the mayor of Gotham in the upcoming Lego Batman film, according to reports.

She joins an already star-studded cast, including Ralph Fiennes (Alfred the Butler), Will Arnett (Batman), Michael Cera (Robin), Rosario Dawson (Batgirl) and Zach Galifianakis (The Joker).

While the film is currently not set to be a musical, it is unclear whether Carey's character will sing any of her classics reimagined for the film. (We suggest her US number one, Hero.)

Both Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter have published conflicting reports, with the former saying she will play Gordon while THR stated she will voice the mayor.

Commissioner Gordon has always been portrayed as a man in the comics while the mayor of Gotham has previously been female - Mayor Marion Grange.

The Lego Movie spin-off will be directed by Chris McKay who worked as an animator on the original film and has directed a number of Robot Chicken episodes.

There’s relatively little other information out there regarding the film, but Lego Movie directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, revealed it will look at all the different eras of Batman, which could range from Adam West’s 60’s Bats to Christian Bale’s Dark Knight.

Lego Batman is scheduled for release 10 February 2017.
