From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The film, from Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, appears nostalgic for a lost era of disco, sideburns, flares and extreme hedonism. But it is also a very grim story about a woman who was a victim of extreme abuse, both on camera and at the hands of her ultra-sleazy husband, Chuck Traynor.
The Independent's film critic Geoffrey Macnab, who saw Lovelace when it was showcased at the Berlin Film Festival, says Amanda Seyfried excels as Linda in a very challenging role requiring her to change from a 21-year-old girl next door to the haunted and battered woman she becomes in the wake of her marriage to Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard).
It is among a slew of recent films about the sex industry, including Michael Winterbottom’s Look of Love, about Soho’s mucky magazine and strip joint ‘King’ Paul Raymond (Steve Coogan), and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's porn addict trying to become less selfish in Don Jon’s Addiction.
Lovelace is in UK cinemas from 23 August.
