Lindsay Lohan has confirmed she would be on board to star in a Mean Girls a sequel.

The actor told Variety she has personally asked producer Lorne Michaels, who is also the creator of Saturday Night Live, to give the cult teen comedy another instalment.

"If anyone has asked for this more than I have, please tell me," she told the publication when asked whether she would be willing to appear in a possible sequel.

"I’ve said it so many times, and so many people have asked me, and I think we’d have so much fun doing it.

"Tina [Fey] and Lorne [Michaels] are so amazing, and to bring everyone back together would be great. Last time I was in New York, I went up to Lorne, and I was like, 'Please!'"

She added of Fey and Michaels: "It’s in their hands."

Tina Fey wrote the screenplay for Mean Girls, which was directed by Mark Waters.

The film stars Lindsay Lohan as Cady Heron, a 16-year-old girl who attends an American high school for the first time after growing up in Africa.

There, Cady becomes acquainted with the school's complicated politics, led by the Plastics, a group of popular – and mean – girls.

The comedy, which also stars Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried, has earned a cult following, thanks in part to many catchphrases that have now become common references for its fans.

It has now become a Broadway musical, which opened on Broadway in April 2018.

A stand-alone sequel to Mean Girls, Mean Girls 2, was released in 2011 on television.

It was overall poorly received, with Entertainment Weekly writing in a review: "Mean Girls 2 isn’t a sequel so much as it is a thinly veiled, low-budget remake of the 2004 hit with which it shares a name."

Mean Girls 2 doesn't star any of the original main cast, nor does it feature the same characters.

Lohan made clear in her interview with Variety that if a sequel were to be made, the entire original team would have to return.

"I don’t know what else you could do, unless someone is killed off, but that would not be Mean Girls," she said. "It has to be everyone."
