From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Brian is back.

Monty Python's Life of Brian is returning to cinemas as part of a 40th-anniversary rerelease. The film, both written by and starring the beloved British comedy group, features Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin.

It tells the story of Brian Cohen (Chapman), a young Jewish man mistaken for the Messiah, due simply to the fact he was born next door to – and on the same day as – Jesus Christ.

The film's original backers, EMI Films, pulled funding after they read the script and deemed its subject matter too controversial.

It was dedicated fan and former Beatles member, George Harrison, who stepped in to save the day. He set up HandMade Films to help fund the film at a cost of £3 million.

The film went on to become a box office success, while later establishing its position as one of the greatest British comedies ever made.

Monty Python's Life of Brian will return to cinemas worldwide on 18 April.
