From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Kate Winslet has spoken about her daughter’s acting career in a new interview with Lorraine Kelly.

Mia Threapleton is the Oscar-winner’s 20-year-old daughter, and has two film credits to her name, including as the lead in the 2020 independent film Shadows.

Appearing on Lorraine, Winslet said: “She’s away just now in the Czech Republic about to start work on a TV series over there.

“That’s been a wonderful thing,” added Winslet, when asked about Mia following her career path. “I think I knew it was coming, I always suspected. And then a few years ago she turned around and said, ‘I think I would like to give it a go.’”

Winslet explained that her daughter’s surname had been “really great” in helping distance her from her mother in auditions.

Threapleton’s name is taken from filmmaker Jim Threapleton, Mia’s father and Winslet’s ex-husband. The pair were married in 1998 and divorced in 2001.

“So that initial job out of the gate, she slipped right under the radar and the people who cast her had absolutely no idea she was my daughter,” said Winslet. “And, of course, that was my biggest fear.”

Winslet can next be seen in the HBO series Mare of Easttown, which can be watched in the UK on Sky Atlantic and Now.
