Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Dame June Whitfield has revealed she has moved into a care home and enjoys not having the responsibility of owning her own house.

The Absolutely Fabulous star, 92, was widowed 16 years ago and lived on her own "in a big house for 10 years".

"Now I have friends where I live and I like it. They’re fun," she said, according to The Mirror. “I don’t have to worry about things like the roof or the plumber any more.”

Whitfield, who portrays "Mother" - Edina's mum - in the hit show and in 2016's Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, continued: “I don’t have any particular routine. I just do very little. I have my massage once a week. I’m not as mobile as I’d like to be, but otherwise I’m fine.”

The TV and film veteran was speaking at the Television and Radio Industry Club’s Christmas Lunch, where she was surprised with a lifetime achievement award.

“I’m absolutely amazed," she said during her acceptance speech. "I wasn’t expecting it. I was just coming for lunch.”
