Justice League star ‘forcefully retracts’ praise for Joss Whedon ahead of the Snyder Cut re-edit

Justice League star Ray Fisher has “forcefully retracted” a statement in which he supported director Joss Whedon.

Fisher, who played Cyborg in the DC comics adaptation, had voiced his support for Whedon after the Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer took over direction of the film from Zack Snyder in 2017.

At a 2017 Comic-Con panel, Fisher said: “Joss [Whedon] is a great guy and Zack [Snyder] picked a great person to come clean up and finish for him.”

Whedon’s Justice League was slated by critics. For three years, DC fans sustained an online campaign for Warner Brothers to “release the Snyder cut” – a hypothetical version of the film that was re-edited and completed by Snyder.

Reposting the Comic-Con clip yesterday (29 June), Fisher wrote on Twitter: “I’d like to take a moment to forcefully retract every bit of this statement.”

At the time of writing, Fisher’s profile on the social media site includes the hashtag #releasetheSnyderCut.

It was revealed last month that Snyder had signed a deal to create a re-edited version of Justice League for HBO Max.

Many of the film’s original actors are set to return to help the Watchmen director complete the task. No release date has been announced yet for the so-called “Snyder cut”, but HBO Max have confirmed it will be out next year.

Warner Brothers chairman Robert Greenblatt said in a statement: “Since I got here 14 months ago, the chant to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut has been a daily drumbeat in our offices and inboxes.

“Well, the fans have asked, and we are thrilled to finally deliver. At the end of the day, it really is all about them and we are beyond excited to be able to release Zack’s ultimate vision for this film in 2021.”
