From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has waded in on the (500) Days of Summer debate calling out the behaviour of his character.

The American starred in the 2009 romantic drama as Tom Hansen, a character at the centre of a failed relationship with Zooey Deschanel's titular Summer Finn depicted in non-linear form.

In response to a fan who blamed Deschanel's character for the dissolution of their relationship, Gordon-Levitt urged the Twitter user to “watch it again,” adding: “It’s mostly Tom’s fault. He’s projecting. He’s not listening. He’s selfish. Luckily he grows by the end.”

(500) Days of Summer has generated a cult fanbase since its release with many praising the two central performances, Tom's interactions with his little sister - played by Chloë Grace Moretz - and the soundtrack which features the likes of The Smiths and Paul Simon.

Gordon-Levitt recently hosted the Comedy Central Roast of Hollywood star Bruce Willis with whom he starred in Rian Johnson's mind-bending thriller Looper.

He'll next star in 7500, an action-thriller which sees an aircraft hi-jacked at 30,000 feet by terrorists.
