The pair, who previously starred together in Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, play husband and wife George and Serena Pemberton.
Based on the novel by Ron Rash, the film is set in North Carolina during the Great Depression and sees Bradley Cooper’s character George struggle to maintain the future of his timber empire.
Jennifer Lawrence is typecast again in the role of a strong, clever woman, who shocks the locals with her gun-wielding skills.
But life becomes more complicated for the couple when they learn that Serena cannot bear children.
Rhys Ifans, Toby Jones, Sam Reid and Sean Harris also star.
The film was originally due to be directed by Darren Aronofsky but he was replaced by Danish Oscar-winner Susanne Bier.
Lawrence and Cooper are said to have shot the film between production on Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.
The film took more than 18 months to make. A source recently told The Hollywood Reporter, “We didn’t want to be the OK version of the Jennifer Lawrence-Bradley Cooper coupling.”
