Three of Bollywood’s most famous female stars are set to come together in a single movie in a rare step for a cinema not known for its all-female ensemble casts.
Bollywood actor and director Farhan Akhtar will be back behind the camera after a long hiatus, with actors Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif all confirmed as starring in his new road-trip film Jee Le Zaraa.
The 47-year-old actor made the announcement that he would be back in the director’s chair on the 20th anniversary of his epic debut, the coming-of-age dramedy Dil Chahta Hai.
“Did someone say road trip? Thrilled to announce my next film as director and what better day than 20 years of Dil Chahta Hai to do it,” the Toofaan actor wrote on Twitter.
“#JeeLeZaraa with @priyankachopra #KatrinaKaif @aliaa08 will commence filming in 2022 and I cannot wait to get this show on the road,” he said, giving a shout out to Chopra Jonas, Bhatt and Kaif.
Chopra Jonas also shared the news of the film on Instagram. She penned a heartfelt message describing the story of how the cast came together to plan this film.
“There are not enough Hindi movies that are female multi-starrers. This led to an impulsive phone call… to my two real friends about this idea that involved three on-screen girlfriends. A celebration of friendship we called it!!” she wrote.
“Katrina, Alia, and I enthusiastically met in February 2020, just before the world shut down, to discuss who we could trust to bring this vision to life for us and our choice was unanimous… Farhan and Ritesh, Zoya and Reema,” she added. “It just so happened that Farhan was working on a female road trip movie at the same time! Talk about all the stars aligning!!”
She concluded by revealing that it took three years to align all of their schedules “but we stuck together and got it done!”
