This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

Filmmaker James Cameron, forever an advocate for the 3D format, wants to push things one step further with his Avatar sequels (all four of them).

He's hoping that you'll be able to watch them - well, some of them at least - in 3D without having to don a pair of glasses.

The director was giving a speech at the Society of Motion Picture and Television engineers when he made the statement.

He said: "I’m going to push. Not only for better tools, workflow, high dynamic range (HDR) and high frame rates (HFR) - the things we are working toward… I’m still very bullish on 3D, but we need brighter projection, and ultimately I think it can happen - with no glasses. We’ll get there."

Glasses-free 3D has not yet been pioneered for use in cinema, however, the technology is available on Nintendo 3DS. The use of cinematic 3D has advanced quite far since its impressive deployment in Cameron's Avatar which was released in 2009.

Having been hard at work on its 'overwritten' sequels (his words) for six years now, it seems Cameron is using the world of Pandora and its Na'vi inhabitants to further the experience. The sequels are said to follow Jake (Sam Worthington) Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and their children's "battle with humans."

On the other end of the spectrum is director Christopher Nolan whose next film - WWII battleship drama Dunkirk - will get an early 35mm/70mm release in cinemas that still project celluloid.

Avatar 2 will be released in 2018 with 3, 4 and 5 being fanned out up until 2023.
