One of the rare missteps in the career of Jake Gyllenhaal presented itself with the hopeful adaptation of popular video game Prince of Persia back in 2010.

It seems the actor has cast its thought to the back of his memory banks, however, as Variety reports he is being tapped to star in yet another film based on a video game - this time Tom Clancy's The Division.

Fresh from its record-breaking sales - it's Ubisoft's fastest-selling product after just three months - film rights have been snappily tapped up with Gyllenhaal himself reportedly on board as producer.

The game is a third-person shooter set in the aftermath of a smallpox pandemic which has swept New York. The titular 'Division' is a Homeland task force designed to investigate the outbreak as well as to combat ensuing criminal activity taking over the city.

Other Ubisoft brands currently in production include Assassin's Creed - which reteams Macbeth director Justin Kurzel with Michael Fassbender - and Splinter Cell which stars Tom Hardy.

Nightcrawler actor Gyllenhaal's most recent films include Demolition, Everest ,and Southpaw. He will next be seen in Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals with Boston Marathon bombing drama Stronger also in post-production.
