The Fast and Furious movies have attracted some great actors to play their villains (Charlize Theron, Luke Evans), and that trend looks set to continue with the upcoming spin-off Hobbs and Shaw.

Vareity reports that Idris Elba has entered the final stages of negotiations to play the movie’s central villain, facing off against Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham’s titular characters.

David Leitch (Deadpool 2) will direct, the screenplay written by Fast and Furious regular Chris Morgan. The Crown breakout Venessa Kirby has also entered negations to play the sister of Shaw (Statham).

Johnson addressed Elba’s casting on Twitter, writing: “He’s a baaaaaad man. Welcoming my dude Idris Elba with tattooed and open arms to our Hobbs And Shaw... Every hero is only as good as their villain. Cue the music... let’s dance.”

Elba recently appeared on screen in Avengers: Infinity War. The actor also recently directed Yardie and is currently working on the Netflix series Turn Up Charlie, which he created and stars in.

Hobbs and Shaw reaches cinemas 26 July, 2019.
