Disney’s quest to remake all their classic animations continues, with the company announcing a live-action version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Titled Hunchback, the musical will borrow heavily from the 1996 animation, while also adding additional story from Victor Hugo’s original novel.

Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the popular stage adaptation and the music for the animation, return to write the film’s music.

According to Deadline, playwright David Henry Hwang, whose previous credits include the 2002 drama Possession and the David Cronenberg directed M Butterfly, will script the film.

Josh Gad has been attatched to produce. The actor – who appeared in the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast – has been in talks to play the titular role, although nothing has been confirmed and casting remains open.

A live-action adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame has been floated around for over 30 years, with the original attempt leading to the famous animated film. Another attempt led to an animated TV series on ABC.

Hunchback joins the growing number of live-action Disney films currently being churned out by the studio, and will follow on from Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Lady and the Tramp, Mulan, Pinoccio, and The Little Mermaid.
