From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Helena Bonham Carter has claimed she “could never understand” what her Ocean's 8 co-star Rihanna was saying on the set of the 2018 film.

The actor made the remarks during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, when the host asked her to “spill the tea” on people she’d worked with in the past.

“She’s amazing, she’s a goddess,” said Bonham Carter of the Barbadian singer. “She looks extraordinary. I could never understand what she said though. We speak totally different languages.

“But I love her, and she’s amazing to look at — really good actress too, and then she’s a great designer.”

On Colin Firth, her co-star in The King’s Speech, Bonham Carter simply said: “Love dearly; talks too much.”

Bonham Carter also praised her fellow actor on The Crown, Olivia Colman, for her crying abilities – “No tear duct like her” – and said Brad Pitt, who she worked with on Fight Club, “looks like he swallowed the sun”.

The Crown, which stars Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, is out on Netflix now.
