From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Margot Robbie’s turn in supervillain movie Suicide Squad isn’t gracing cinemas until next summer but already, her character Harley Quinn is the most searched Halloween costume of the year state-side.

Google has set up a fun feature called Frightgeist to warn US partygoers just how unoriginal their outfit plans may or may not be, breaking down the most searched costumes by geographic trends.

Harley is famous for being the accomplice and on-off love interest of Batman’s ultimate nemesis, The Joker. Robbie’s get-up for David Ayer’s film has already been teased in the Comic Con trailer and cast photo, so anyone wanting to dress as her should prepare for shops to sell out of red and blue hairspray.

Other iconic movie characters proving popular include Batman, Minions, The Joker, Wonder Woman and anything Star Wars or superhero-related.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Catwoman, Maleficent, Princess Leia and Elsa from Frozen also make appearances further down the list.

The national Top 10 list looks like this at time of publication:

1. Harley Quinn

2. Star Wars (presumably just anything to do with the films)

3. Superhero

4. Pirate

5. Batman

6. Minnie Mouse

7. Witch

8. Minions

9. Joker

10. Wonder Woman
