Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society bears quite the intriguing title - though we're not dealing here with a quirky start-up or high-concept bar, but an adaptation of the New York Times Best Seller published in 2008.

Penned by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, the idea blossomed after Shaffer found herself trapped at Guernsey's airport after the descent of heavy fog, utilising the time to delve into the island's history, especially its occupation during WWII.

And so brewed in her mind the tale of Juliet Ashton, a London writer who forms an unexpected bond with the titular meeting group, initially created as a ruse to subvert Nazi rule right under their gaze.

With Lily James as its lead, the Mike Newell-directed film delves into a picture of Britain in the immediate aftermath of war; a nation trying to savour the lives they've been blessed with, while old traumas still continually bubble to the surface.

Also starring here are Michiel Huisman, Glen Powell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Katherine Parkinson, Matthew Goode, Tom Courtenay, and Penelope Wilton.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society hits UK cinemas 20 April.
