Marvel conducted a wide search for the mystery part, which called for an Asian actress, according to The Hollywood Reporter, doing several rounds of chemistry reads (where they read with the cast to assess, well, their chemistry).
GOTG 2 is a big break for Klementieff who has until now mostly worked in France, though she did appear in Spike Lee’s recent Oldboy remake in which she performed martial arts, a skill that might well be utilised in Guardians.
James Gunn’s first Guardians of the Galaxy film was a huge box office hit thanks to its more light-hearted take on the comic book superhero genre, with Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel all expected to return for the sequel.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has a release date of 5 May, 2017, with filming expected to start early in 2016.
