He is the favourite to star as Danny in Fox’s Grease Live special and now, Zac Efron has said the role would be an “honour”.

But US actor, known from his Disney days, also told E! Online that following in John Travolta’s footsteps would be daunting.

“Those are big shoes to fill,” he said. “I think I came as close to it as you could in High School Musical. To actually do that? Yeah, those are big shoes.”

Travolta played the lead alongside Olivia Newton-John’s Sandy in the 1978 movie adaptation of Grease. Stockard Channing and Jeff Conaway also performed as bickering “cool kids” couple Rizzo and Kenickie.

Fox confirmed the forthcoming three-hour broadcast earlier this week but cast members and production partners are yet to be announced.

The US network’s Shana C Waterman spoke of her excitement at bringing “one of the most beloved musical stories ever told” to viewers.

“It’s iconic and addictive songs make it the perfect fit for Fox and we’re going to give it the kind of star power and production quality to make every Sandy, Danny, Rizzo and Kenickie out there want to get up and sing-a-long.”

Efron also revealed that he is “100 per cent” keen for a High School Musical reunion so fans might at least have that to look forward to, maybe.
