Movie lovers in the UK would give gold statuettes to Transformers: Age of Extinction, American Hustle and The Lego Movie – if Google’s annual ‘Zeitgeist’ list of the most searched for films is anything to go by, that is.

Yes, the public’s Oscars have been announced and Michael Bay’s fourth Transformers instalment would take home your top prize, despite being slated by critics as “a horrible experience”.

Paramount clearly thinks Transformers 4 is in with an actual shot at the Academy Awards in February, however, having put the CGI movie up for consideration “in all categories including best picture of the year”.

Google-searching film fans also favoured crime comedy American Hustle, starring Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Christian Bale and Jennifer Lawrence.

Lawrence has proved herself to have top pulling power in 2014 with The Hunger Games, in which she plays ass-kicking heroine Katniss Everdeen, also among the most searched for films at number nine.

The 24-year-old features on Google’s most searched for female celebrity list in second place after pop sensation Beyoncé.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s unexpected smash hit The Lego Movie came third on the movies list, followed by 22 Jump Street with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.

Matthew McConaughey won his best actor Oscar for playing AIDs patient and hustler Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club, the fifth most searched for film of 2014.

Blockbuster comedy The Inbetweeners 2, David Fincher’s Golden Globe-nominated thriller Gone Girl, hijacking drama Captain Phillips and family favourite Despicable Me complete the top ten.
