From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

While critics may have given Bohemian Rhapsody a rough ride, the public and awards voters alike have praised the Freddie Mercury biopic to high heavens.

The film (which holds a 62 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score) beat critical darlings A Star is Born and BlacKkKlansman to win the Golden Globe for best motion picture drama, while lead actor Rami Malek took home best actor.

Queen guitarist Brian May, who acted as a creative and musical consultant on Bohemian Rhapsody, has since reacted to the victory, criticising the reviewers who dismissed the film.

“The mistake that critics made was reviewing the trailer instead of reviewing the film,” he told Deadline. “They jumped to conclusions. Once people stake their claim, it’s hard for them to withdraw.”

In his acceptance speech at the Globes, Malek thanked May and the other members of Queen for their support while taking on the role of Mercury.

“To you Brian May, to you Roger Taylor for ensuring that authenticity and inclusively exists in the music and in the world and all of us,” he said.

“Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime. I love you, you beautiful man. This is for and because of you, gorgeous.”

Notably, during the ceremony, none of the cast or crew mentioned director Bryan Singer while accepting awards. The filmmaker – who was fired midway through production – has since taken to social media to react to the win.

Meanwhile, the Golden Globes, designed to award the best in film and television, also saw wins for Green Book and The Marvellous Mrs Maisel. You can find a full list of winners here.
