From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. However, while Barry Jenkins’ film about a gay black man struggling with his sexuality won the award for Best Drama, it was La La Land - Damien Chazelle's musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone - that swept across the board, taking seven awards, including Best Director.
Viewers of the ceremony have expressed annoyance on Twitter, labelling Moonlight’s lack of awards a ‘snub’ by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The two films were in separate categories for best film - La La Land being a musical and Moonlight Being a Drama - only competing against each other for Best Director. Mahershalla Ali was, however, generally thought to be the main contender for best supporting actor.
The full list of winners is available here: La La Land won Best Comedy/Musical, Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress for Emma Stone, Best Film Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Score, and Best Film Song for “City of Stars”. Moonlight won Best Drama.
Notable moments from the night include Hugh Laurie and Meryl Streep talking out against Trump, Jimmy Fallon’s star-studded opening musical number, and Michael Keaton getting a film’s name wrong.
