Ghostbusters 3 director Paul Feig has confirmed on Twitter that the reboot will centre around an all-female team.

Responding to the rumours, he wrote "Yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call."

Feig will reunite with The Heat screenwriter Katie Dippold to co-write the script, their 2013 buddy cop comedy having been a box office success (in spite of average reviews).

A reboot of the 80s franchise has been mooted for some time, with original actor Bill Murray saying he wasn't interested in returning to it but liked the idea of a new female trio.

"It sounds great to me, it sounds as good an idea as any other," he told the Toronto Star. "There are a lot of women that could scare off any kind of vapour.

"Melissa [McCarthy] would be a spectacular Ghostbuster. And Kristen Wiig is so funny – God, she’s funny!"

"I like this girl Linda Cardinelli a lot. And Emma Stone is funny. There are some funny girls out there."

McCarthy could well feature considering she was the best thing about The Heat, which was also female-fronted with Sandra Bullock co-starring.

Hollywood veteran Ivan Reitman will serve as producer on Ghostbusters 3, which has yet to be given a release date.
