From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Master of suspense, Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski, was unable to attend the premiere last weekend at the Berlinale, but the film is among 20 contenders for the festival's prestigious Golden Bear award. It's received rave reviews and an enthusiastic response.

The political thriller stars Ewan McGregor (Angels & Demons, The Men Who Stare at Goats), Pierce Brosnan (Mamma Mia!, Die Another Day), Kim Cattral (Sex & the City), Olivia Williams (An Education), and Tom Wilkinson (Michael Clayton, Duplicity).

It follows the story of a ghostwriter who takes on the completion of memoir of a former British prime minister (apparently based on Tony Blair), when he learns the manuscript is in danger of derailing since its previous collaborator died. As the project develops, the writer uncovers secrets that jeopardize the book, the world and his own life.

It is written by Robert Harris, who adapted the story from his novel, The Ghost.

The acclaimed 76-year-old director of The Pianist, Chinatown, Rosemary's Baby, and Repulsion, is currently under house arrest in his chalet in Gstaad, Switzerland, pending extradition to the US for a 1974 indictment he escaped.

The Ghost Writer opens in New York and Los Angeles, Polanski's native Poland, Russia, Germany, and Austria. Select US cities and countries will follow on February 26 and over the next month.
