From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A new image from the Fifty Shades of Grey film has been unveiled, showing Anastasia Steele holding a pencil to her lips.

The picture shows actress Dakota Johnson, who plays naïve student Anastasia in the film, looking up at who we can only presume to be Christian Grey.

The photograph was released on the movie’s official Twitter account to mark Anastasia’s birthday earlier this week.

The image, which has already been criticised as yet another unsexy snippet to be teased from the film, follows the release of the first full length Fifty Shades of Grey trailer in July.

Starring Jamie Dornan in the role of business man and S&M lover Christian Grey, the movie adaptation of EL James’ erotic novel is directed by the acclaimed artist-turned-director Sam Taylor-Johnson.

But despite Taylor-Johnson’s involvement, the trailer drew criticism on its release for being too conservative, with many calling it “Fifty Shades of Tame”.

Producer Michael De Luca has said the film will be less explicit than the book.

“We’re very conscious of not making anything gratuitous or exploitive while being faithful to the stories of the book and the fans of the book,” he said.

In spite of criticism, the Fifty Shades of Grey official trailer has already become the most-watched trailer of 2014.

Fifty Shades of Grey is released in the UK on 14 February 2015.
