Fast & Furious actress Gal Gadot has been cast to play Wonder Woman in the forthcoming Batman Vs Superman film.

The Israeli-born actress will play the iconic role alongside Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman, according to Deadline Hollywood.

Gadot has starred in three Fast & Furious films as Gisele, as well as roles in 2010 film Date Night and TV series Entourage.

Named Miss Israel in 2004, Gadot has also appeared in Israeli TV shows Asfur and Eretz Nehederet.

Director Zack Snyder said the actress had a “magical quality” that makes her perfect for the role.

“Wonder Woman is arguably one of the most powerful female characters of all time and a fan favourite in the DC Universe. Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role,” he said.

“We look forward to audiences discovering Gal in the first feature film incarnation of this beloved character.”

News about whether Wonder Woman would even appear in the film was kept secret until yesterday. Several members of the Justice League will reportedly join her in the film, according to Variety.

The DC Comics' superhero has yet to star in her own film despite turning 40 next year.

Lynda Carter starred in the title role as the popular heroine in the 1970s US TV series Wonder Woman.

Batman vs Superman is due for release in the US on 17 July 2015, joining a summer of blockbusters including Star Wars Episode VII and Terminator 5.
