The latest Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer has revealed the surprising origins of a classic character.

Until now, the filmmakers hadn't disclosed the name of the character played by Claudi Kim in the new sequel, with good reason: she's actually playing Nagini, a circus performer who years later becomes the faithful serpent companion of Voldemort.

We catch a glimpse of Nagini's transformation into a snake in the latest trailer, with Entertainment Weekly confirming the character's identity.

“It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini,” Kim said. “You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character.”

JK Rowling clarified that Nagini is not an Animagus like Professor McGonagall, who can transform into animals at their own will, but a Maledictus. That means Nagini suffers from a blood curse, knowing that one day she'll permanently be trapped as a snake.

The second of five confirmed adventures set within the same world as Harry Potter sees Eddie Redmayne return as Newt Scamander who will this time around be enlisted by Hogwarts’ Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) to thwart the plans of the villainous Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) back in 1927.

Returning for the sequel are Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller and Zoë Kravitz who plays Leta Lestrange. The film sees the adventure move from New York to London and then onto Paris with director David Yates promising fans there’ll be “some surprising nods” to Harry Potter, Nagini's true identity presumably among them.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is released in UK cinemas on November 16, 2018.
