Batman v Superman is a film that's basically all Easter Eggs; in fact, it's probably more astute to just call the entire thing one gigantic two-and-a-half hour Justice League Easter Egg. Which means there's a fair amount to unpack here; thankfully, all the tough work's been done by YouTuber Mr. Sunday Movies, whose epic 8-minute analysis unveils each of Batman v Superman's hidden secrets.
Though Zack Snyder's blockbuster doesn't directly adapt any single comics storyline, it's positively littered with references to multiple DC narratives: the armoured Batsuit from Dark Knight Returns, The Death of Superman, A Death in the Family, and The Flashpoint Paradox.
More intriguing, perhaps, are the deeply embedded hints about the upcoming DC cinematic universe slate. The Robin suit and its graffiti, of course, heavily imply he was killed off by The Joker; which is something hopefully to be elaborated upon in Suicide Squad. Diana Prince/Wonder Woman is also seen to open the meta-human files (Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg) in order of the films' release dates.
A Mother Box is shown to lead to the creation of Cyborg, which may link back to a deleted scene which shows Lex Luthor in commune with a mysterious figure holding three of said Mother Boxes; living computers created by the race to which one of DC's most formidable villains, Darkseid, belongs to. It's Darkseid that's certainly been set up as the big villain for Justice League: Part One, with his symbol and his minion parademons cropping up in Batman's Knightmare scene.
There are also a bunch of cameos from DC characters: including the controversially killed-off Daily Planet photographer Jimmy Olsen; Vicki Vale introducing Lex Luthor at his party (the same role Kim Basinger played in 1989's Batman); and the return of Carol Ferris from Man of Steel, better known as Hal Jordan/The Green Lantern's love interest, as played by Blake Lively in the 2011 film.
Justice League: Part One hits US cinemas 17 November.
