Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Ida was the big winner at the European Film Awards, taking home five awards including best film and best director for Pawel Pawlikowski.
The black and white drama set in Poland in the 1960s sees a convent girl about to take her vows discover secrets from her past. Ida will not be a frontrunner for the Best Language Foreign Film. The only disappointment for the Ida film team was that the best actress prize went to Marion Cotillard for Two Days, One Night, which may have been because the Ida vote was split between the two leading ladies Agata Kulesza and Agata Trzebuchowska.
On a good night for British film Timothy Spall won best actor for his eponymous turn in Mike Leigh biopic Turner, Justine Wright won best editor for Locke, Mica Levi won best composer for Under the Skin and Joakim Sunström took home the European Sound Designer award for British prison drama Starred Up.
On the back of the 12 Years a Slave Best Picture Oscar, British director Steve McQueen won the European Achievement in World Cinema. He dedicated the prize to Jean Vigo.
Earlier in the evening when questioned about the fallout from the leaked Sony emails in which executive Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin made suspect remarks about President Obama, the British director said that he knew both Pascal and Rudin, yet was not surprised by the content of the emails, stating “I’m not surprised by anything.”
